Twitter’s Transformation: A Promising or Polarizing Play?
By: Mihir Rao
Recently, Twitter rebranded itself to ‘X’, changing its logo. Elon Musk, the owner, mentioned this rebrand in a series of tweets. This change may not seem so huge at face level, but the rebrand of Twitter heralds monumental changes for the twitterverse. But firstly, why did Twitter rebrand itself in the first place?
The Reason
After being acquired by Elon Musk in October 2022, Twitter has gone through many changes and redesigns, from charging users for the blue tick marking an account as verified, to a subscription service. These changes to the company have undeniably been met with some backlash due to a memorable/long known brand being changed.
The rebrand has been a very unexpected and surprising change. Recently, Elon Musk explained that he made this change to the company because he wanted to make twitter an ‘everything app’. This leads us to the next question - what does he mean by an “everything app”?
The Everything App
An ‘Everything App’, is an app which can be used for many things, and is not limited to just one function. For example, an Everything App could contain functions such as social media, news, weather forecasts, e-commerce, and much more.
An 'Everything App' represents a versatile and multifunctional solution catering to diverse needs. This innovative application seamlessly integrates a plethora of features, ranging from social media interaction and real-time news updates to accurate weather forecasts and convenient e-commerce options.
It can serve as a comprehensive hub where users can effortlessly transition between various functionalities, enabling them to stay connected with friends, stay informed about global events, plan activities based on weather insights, engage in seamless online shopping experiences and much more!
The beauty of the Everything App lies in its ability to transform a single platform into a virtual Swiss army knife of utilities, ensuring users have a one-stop destination for an array of daily tasks and entertainment. This hub of functionalities not only enhances convenience but also minimizes the need for switching between multiple apps, simplifying users' digital experiences.
This could have many advantages and disadvantages, such as:
Pro: The everything app would make access to functions in a device extremely easy.
Con: The everything app would be an extremely difficult, if not impossible task to execute successfully.
Pro: Since no other apps would be needed, an everything app could, hypothetically, receive tremendous amounts of traffic.
Con: Even if an everything app is launched, the quality of each of the functions of the app may not be up to standards.
As mentioned above, the everything app does have a lot of potential, but still remains a mammoth task to complete successfully.
The Future
Elon Musk plans to model X after a very successful app in China which has many features such as chatting, video calling, mobile payment and more. Since there is no western equivalent to this app, he plans to make X the new ‘Everything app’.
He also plans to make online payment a function of Twitter, since an online payment model could be profitable for Twitter.
To conclude, there is only one question that comes to mind: Is the rebrand a wise decision regarding the future of Twitter? Only time can tell.
