The Eternals - Misinterpreted movie or a cosmic mistake? (SPOILER FREE)

By: Mihir Rao

After Spider-Man No Way Home, people were most excited to see The Eternals. However, there were many differing opinions about the controversial addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some people even calling it the worst Marvel movie ever made! So, what gives? Well, here’s a bit more information about the movie, and a little about why the movie got bad reviews. Firstly, let me talk a bit about the plot.

The Plot:

The Eternals, a group of powered aliens from another planet, arrived to Earth millions of years ago to help human civilisation grow, and most importantly, to protect it from any threats, namely the Deviants. The movie follows Sersi, Ajak, Druig, Makkari, Phastos, Gilgamesh, Thena, Ikaris Sprite and Kingo in a journey of epic proportions.

Expectations:

Going into the movie, people were unsure of what to expect. As proven by the trailer, the story, and many reviews, it was clear that this movie was not like the other Marvel movies. The movie intrigued a lot of people because of this, however it put off a lot of people who were used to the same formula. This, in part, could have caused the controversy behind people’s opinions about the movie.

The Marvel Formula:

Many of Marvel’s movies follow a certain pattern, which people have come to know and love.

The right balance of action, comedy and drama was what everyone could look forward to seeing in a Marvel movie, however with the release of The Eternals, Marvel Studios decided to try something a little bit different.

Why it went wrong

The Fanbase:

A lot of Marvel movie fans are just casual fans, not really aware of the newer and less popular superheroes. This is why movie franchises such as Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America have a greater base audience.

The change:

The story was very different from the plots that Marvel usually puts out. Some parts of the movie seemed interesting and intriguing, however overall the movie seemed stretched, which is probably one of the main reasons for its controversy.

Tempo:

A very crucial part of a story is its tempo. It shouldn’t go too fast, and shouldn’t go too slow either.

This was one of the main problems in the movie, going extremely quickly in some parts and feeling slightly stretched in other parts. However, some parts of the movie have a spot-on speed and they don't seem stretched or abrupt, so the overall tempo of the movie wasn't too volatile.

Spreading itself too thin:

The movie in itself wasn’t too bad, but what made it seem quite abrupt also was the fact that it had 10 leads, and not enough time to focus on their separate stories. With only 2 and a half hours to finish the story, have character development, and allow for other projects/movies to talk place after the movie is a lot, and this movie stretched itself too thin by having 10 characters who all needed to have personalities and backstories of their own.

To conclude, the movie wasn’t what we expected, and this was both a good and a bad thing. The cinematic camerawork did help the movie a bit, however I understand why this movie didn’t get as many positive reviews as other movies from the MCU. However, even though this movie was what it was, we don’t need to be worried about the quality of future Marvel movies, since Spider-Man No Way Home was a box-office success and overall a great movie. So, this shouldn’t be discouraging for watching future Marvel movies, just a benchmark of what Marvel can improve on and has improved on in their movies.
