The Mysterious Multiverse: A peek into the unknown

By: Mihir Rao

The multiverse is a concept which has been introduced many times in the media, with new movies like Doctor Strange 2 making the multiverse the theme of their plot. However, many times, the multiverse has been wrongly portrayed .

First of all, what is the multiverse?

Well, everybody knows our universe, which we inhabit. Our universe is astronomically big, maybe even infinite. Even with its colossal size, scientists have wondered about what is beyond it.

The Multiverse provides a solution for this question: It is a cluster of unique universes. That is probably the most accurate definition of the multiverse we can make now, because the properties and content of the multiverse wildly differ and are an object of debate.

Theory 1: Our universe is big. Really big. It is so humongous in size that we don’t even know how big it is, and we have to rely on the observable part of the universe, which is the part of the universe from which we can capture light. Basically, there is a theory that the universe is so huge, that everything that can happen, is happening somewhere in the universe right now.

In quantum mechanics, there is something known as superposition. Imagine this: A cat is in a box, next to a poison linked to a special detonator, that has a 50% chance to go off at any time. The box is covered, and there is no way to know if the poison was detonated. Erwin Schrödinger posited that the cat is both alive and dead at the same time, until the box is opened. Although it was a little gruesome example, it was perfect for explaining the weird behaviour of particles like the electron. And this is where the next theory comes in:

Theory 2 (The Many Worlds Interpretation): This theory suggests that every time there was a choice for a particle, i.e. it could pick which state it wanted to go to, a universe would be created for each choice there is. I know it sounds a bit confusing, but in a nutshell, every single thing that is physically possible, will happen in an alternate universe.

Thinking about the multiverse and its possibilities is a great thing, but another question arises: How can we get there?

Well, there’s no answer to that, yet.

In reality, the multiverse is a very weird concept and we haven’t really reached a proper conclusion on what it could look like, but we know for sure, that if it does exist, our universe would pale in comparison to it.
