The rise of Internet Influencers: Fantastic or Flawed?

By: Mihir Rao

It feels like the Internet has been around for ages, even though the modern internet has only been around for a couple of decades. Through the Internet, many economic opportunities have also been created. The last couple of years especially, the economy has also been helped greatly by e-commerce and the Internet.

But, through the Internet, people have risen up to have such a huge fanbase that they have an influence on many things on the Internet, and to an extent the economy itself! But who are these people?

Internet influencers are people who are vastly popular on the internet, to the point where they are able to have a visible influence over their followers. Internet Influencers have a huge influence over media, politics, shopping choices and the world nowadays, when a couple of years ago, it was limited. However, the term ‘Influencer’ is very vague, as there are a plethora of types of influencers on the internet, such as:

Social Media Influencers:

Here, I’m not including YouTube as a social media as I will cover that separately. These influencers are on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc. and no matter what the platform is, they are very important.

Celebrities:

Of course you also have conventional celebrities, who may not have reached their fame through the Internet, however their presence on the Internet makes them an influencer. Nowadays, nearly every celebrity has a social media account, so they are also influencers.

YouTube Influencers:

I will talk about this more in detail later, but there are tens of thousands of influencers on YouTube, and that’s only influencers who have over a million subscribers.

Originally, the best way to make money through the internet was through other ways, not social media, since there was no proper way to make money through that and the amount of people who used the Internet worldwide wasn’t as big as it is today, social media wasn’t too popular around the world.

However, this changed with the introduction of a new platform, YouTube. Being launched at the cusp of the Internet becoming more popular than it ever was, YouTube thrived because it allowed people to make and share content in the form of easily accessible videos. It was able to stay popular and afloat for many reasons, such as:

1 . Algorithm: YouTube’s proprietary algorithm was one of the most powerful tools in sustaining YouTube’s popularity. By recommending videos that users would like based on their searches and watched videos, they could keep users on the platform for much longer times.

2. Internet ‘boom’: YouTube was launched on December 15th 2005, just around the time the internet started to become really popular. More and more people were getting devices in their homes, and because of this, YouTube was getting millions and millions of views.

Through this, influencers rose up to fame and now millions of influencers exist on the Internet.

Nowadays, anybody can be an influencer if they have the right content and aim for the correct target audience. However is the rise of influencers all good or are there some negatives to this?

Other apps like Instagram have the same sort of effect on their audience. By using their algorithm to find people and posts that the user would be interested in, Instagram keeps people on the platform for longer. This, along with many organisations and celebrities having Instagram accounts adds to the popularity of Instagram.

Pro: Due to the huge amount of influencers there are, people can choose whoever they want to watch. Also, there is a lot of variety in topics which one can choose, ranging from games, to politics.

Con: This prompts a lot of time spent on social media, which can sometimes get out of hand and cause adverse effects towards one’s physical and mental health.

Pro: People can meet other people who share their interests, partly thanks to influencers and platforms like YouTube. Many online communities are thriving and serving a good purpose.

Con: Because anyone can be an influencer with the right strategy and content, influencers’ content varies greatly, from being good for you to being detrimental to your health! Popularity overshadows logic and even safety on many occasions. Remember the many dangerous challenges prompted by social media that went viral?

To conclude, the meteoric rise of influencers to fame did have many good and bad impacts, but the true answer is subjective. Anybody can become an influencer, you just need to have a good strategy and good content. Equipment and money doesn’t matter as much as these two things do! As long as your message is right and your aim is clear then there is not much blocking you from obtaining fame!
